Bahamas Project
Timeframe
August 2024 to November 2025
Project Aims
New Zealand is investing in a project to improve waste recovery and climate-smart practices for small ruminant farming in the Bahamas. The project aims to boost productivity while reducing the emissions intensity of livestock systems. It trials innovative practices at the Gladstone Road Agricultural Centre (GRAC) and develops GRAC into a hub for best-practice training for extension providers, students, and farmers.
The project delivers four key outputs: identifying options for farmers to reduce environmental impacts from intensive ruminant production, upgrading GRAC as a demonstration and training facility, creating extension materials for on-farm adoption, and preparing a data-driven business case to help the government access international climate finance. These efforts strengthen sustainable farming and support the Bahamas’ climate goals.
Progress
In September 2025, New Zealand technical experts visited The Bahamas for workshops with government, industry, and farmers.
Completed the discovery phase in key project areas, including Nassau, Cat Island, and Eleuthera.
Held workshops with smallholder farmers raising goats, pigs, and some cattle.
