Strengthening MRV Systems in Agriculture Across Latin America and the Caribbean
Guatemala City, Guatemala – September 2025
A three-day regional workshop is currently underway in Guatemala, bringing together agricultural experts, government officials, and technical specialists from across Latin America and the Caribbean to enhance cooperation and learning on Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) systems in agriculture.
The event is hosted by GIC-LAC, implemented by the Alliance of Biodiversity International and CIAT, and funded through the New Zealand Government’s Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative, as part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA).
Attendees at the workshop representing workshop partners and the five participating countries
The workshop is focused on building technical capacity to produce transparent, consistent, and robust greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories in the agriculture sector. Participants are engaging in technical sessions, collaborative exercises, and peer-to-peer exchanges to strengthen national MRV systems and align them with international climate commitments.
“This is more than a technical workshop—it’s a space for regional solidarity. We’re learning from each other’s challenges and successes,” said Yomayuza Herrera, a technical advisor from Colombia.
“The GIC-LAC project is helping us move from fragmented data to integrated systems that support both national policy and international reporting,” shared José Manuel Sylvester, a participant from the Dominican Republic.
“We now have a clearer understanding of how to tailor MRV systems to our national contexts while still meeting global standards,” added Lucía Ramírez, a climate policy officer from Guatemala.
The workshop also emphasises gender inclusion, data harmonisation, and institutional coordination as key pillars of effective MRV systems. It builds on previous regional efforts and reflects a growing commitment to climate-smart agriculture and emissions reduction across the LAC region.
By the end of the workshop, participants are expected to leave with actionable strategies to enhance their MRV systems and contribute to more sustainable and climate-resilient agrifood systems.
Representatives are taking part from Colombia, Honduras, Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
