ADOPT Caribbean Launch marks another phase in New Zealand’s CSA Initiative
Georgetown, Guyana – The ADOPT Caribbean project has begun following a series of strategic meetings and field visits in Guyana by a representative of New Zealand’s Latin America and Caribbean Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) Programme. This project underscores the country’s commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture and climate resilience across the region, as well as its ongoing partnership with IICA
Set to be implemented in Guyana, Jamaica, and Saint Kitts, ADOPT Caribbean aims to strengthen CSA practices that improve soil health and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions—critical steps toward sustainable food systems in the face of climate change.
During the visit, the New Zealand representative engaged with government and industry leaders, including the Guyana Rice Development Board, and conducted on-the-ground assessments of local farming systems. These interactions are shaping the project’s two core outcomes:
Empowering Farmers – Promoting awareness and adoption of CSA practices proven to enhance soil health and lower GHG emissions.
Building Institutional Capacity – Supporting government agencies to identify sources of soil-based GHG emissions and establish baseline emissions profiles for major agricultural production systems in each participating country.
The ADOPT Caribbean initiative represents a collaborative effort to tackle climate challenges while safeguarding agricultural productivity and food security. By combining scientific research, farmer engagement, and policy support, this project will help Caribbean nations transition toward more sustainable and resilient farming systems. The project reflects our shared vision of building resilient agricultural systems that protect livelihoods and the environment. Soil health is at the heart of this effort—healthy soils mean stronger crops, lower emissions, and a more sustainable future for farmers and communities alike,” said Lee Nelson, CSA Programme Director.
Since its inception, New Zealand’s CSA Programme has supported multiple projects across Latin America and the Caribbean, advancing innovative farming practices, improving soil health, and reducing emissions. These efforts have strengthened institutional frameworks and empowered farmers to adopt climate-smart solutions, contributing to regional food security and global climate goals.
