COP30 Spotlights GANASUR: Driving Climate-Smart Livestock Solutions in the Southern Cone
Belém, Brazil – November 2025
At COP30, the GANASUR project took centre stage as a leading example of how science and collaboration can drive climate-smart solutions for livestock systems across Latin America.
Showcased under PROCISUR—the Cooperative Programme for Technological Development of Agri-food and Agro-industry in the Southern Cone—GANASUR is a flagship initiative of the LAC:CSA programme, designed to strengthen climate change mitigation through cutting-edge research and regional cooperation.
Ignacio Beltrán, Technical Coordinator of GANASUR and researcher at INIA Remehue (Chile), delivered a compelling virtual presentation titled: “Development of Mitigation Strategies for the Livestock Sector through a Collaborative Approach in the Southern Cone.” His address highlighted:
Strategic Objectives: Delivering science-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in beef cattle systems.
Progress So Far: Mapping production systems and building a shared parametric data model across Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
What’s Next: Creating Marginal Abatement Cost Curves (MACC) to estimate the cost of cutting one ton of CO₂eq through targeted mitigation measures.
The session, moderated by Cecilia Gianoni (PROCISUR Executive Secretary), featured an influential panel of leaders from EMBRAPA, INIA Uruguay, and IICA, who stressed the urgency of harmonised metrics, robust models, and scalable mitigation strategies.
“Our goal is to provide the Southern Cone with science-based tools that make climate action practical and economically viable. By working together, we can transform livestock systems into models of sustainability while safeguarding productivity,” said Ignacio Beltrán.
Funded by the New Zealand Government’s Climate Smart Agriculture Initiative, GANASUR is part of its contribution to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA). The project brings together expertise in GHG inventories, genetics, and animal nutrition to support evidence-based policymaking and regional climate commitments.
As COP30 wrapped up, GANASUR stood out as a model for integrating science, policy, and practice—paving the way for sustainable livestock production and climate resilience across Latin America.
