GANASUR Meeting in Paraguay Highlights Progress and Next Steps
Asunción, Paraguay – November 26–27, 2025
The GANASUR project, “Developing mitigation strategies for the livestock sector through a collaborative approach across the Southern Cone,” held a pivotal in-person technical meeting in Asunción, bringing together leading agricultural research institutions and international experts to advance climate-smart livestock production.
Convened by PROCISUR with support from the Paraguayan Institute of Agricultural Technology (IPTA), the event gathered representatives from the National Agricultural Research Institutes (INIA) of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay, alongside technical specialists and consultants. Key Objectives and Discussions
The meeting aimed to review progress from the first half of the project, foster joint analysis, and define strategic priorities for the next phase.
Component 1: Researchers presented preliminary results on the typology of full-cycle beef cattle systems, identifying data gaps and improvement areas.
Component 2: Discussions focused on greenhouse gas mitigation strategies, with country-specific recommendations aligned to national climate commitments (NDCs).
Component 3: Participants explored methodologies for economic and environmental analysis, including the development of marginal abatement cost curves (MACCs).
Component 4: Updates on project management and communication strategies were shared, alongside plans for a scientific paper summarizing key findings.
Voices from the Meeting
“Regional collaboration is the key to climate-smart livestock systems. By working together, we can deliver solutions that are practical and impactful,” said Nicolás Costa, Latin America research and policy lead for the GRA.
“The Southern Cone faces unique challenges, but also opportunities. Our joint work ensures that mitigation strategies are practical and aligned with national commitments,” added Dr Ignacio Beltrán, researcher from INIA Chile and project coordinator.
“New Zealand’s support through the Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative strengthens our ability to innovate and deliver solutions that matter for farmers and the environment,” emphasized Dr Cecilia Gianoni, Executive Secretary of PROCISUR.
Commitment to Climate-Resilient Livestock
Co-funded by PROCISUR and the Government of New Zealand’s Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative under the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), GANASUR underscores the importance of regional collaboration in addressing climate challenges.
The meeting concluded with renewed commitments to strengthen synergies and accelerate actions toward sustainable, climate-resilient livestock systems across the Southern Cone.
